Apparel Industry Leaders Launch Sustainable Apparel Coalition to set Common Metrics and Standards to Improve Apparel Sustainability

1 Mar 2011 | 7:48 AM ET

VENTURA, Calif., March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- A group of leading apparel and footwear brands, retailers, manufacturers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic experts, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today launched the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The Coalition will work on a collaborative approach to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products sold around the world by: Leading the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built on an industry-wide index for measuring and evaluating apparel and footwear product sustainability; Spotlighting promising technological innovations; and Identifying opportunities for improving current social and environmental practices throughout the supply chain by collaborating to establish consistent expectations for brands, retailers, and manufacturers.

The goal of the Coalition is to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built on an industry-wide index for businesses to use to measure and evaluate apparel and footwear product sustainability performance. The tools will be developed with involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, and the metrics will be fully transparent to encourage broad adoption of the index globally. To accomplish this, the Coalition will draw on the work of different efforts to measure and track apparel sustainability including the Outdoor Industry Association "Eco Index" and Nike's "Environmental Apparel Design" tools. The group has been working together informally since early 2010, and will begin beta-testing the initial version of an apparel and footwear sustainability index in 2011.

Founding members of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition are based in North America, Asia, Europe and the U.K. They include Adidas, Arvind Mills, C&A, Duke University, Environmental Defense Fund, Esprit, Esquel, Gap Inc., H&M, HanesBrands, Intradeco, JC Penney, Kohl's Department Stores, Lenzing, Levi Strauss & Co., LF USA, a division of Li & Fung Limited, Marks & Spencer, Mountain Equipment Co-op, New Balance, Nike, Nordstrom, Otto Group, Outdoor Industry Association, Patagonia, Pentland Brands, REI, TAL Apparel, Target, Timberland, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Verite, VF Corp, and Walmart.

"The largest and most influential corporations in apparel and footwear together with leading environmental and social organizations have voluntarily engaged in this collective effort because they recognize the opportunity to get in front of the growing need to measure and manage the environmental and social impacts of their products," said Rick Ridgeway, Coalition Chair and Vice President of Environmental Programs, Patagonia. "More importantly, they recognize the threat to the planet and its inhabitants by continuing the model of 'business as usual.'" Each of the Coalition's participating companies and organizations see an opportunity to advance their own sustainability goals by collaborating to create more uniform, broadly defined tools for measuring sustainability, and for collective actions to drive innovations in products and manufacturing that will benefit the entire apparel industry and consumers.

Intradeco converts dyehouse effluent to plant fertilizer

July 14, 2010 Miami, FL

14 July 2010, Miami, FL – Intradeco Apparel Inc, a manufacturer of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing , has pioneered numerous energy efficient programs under its corporate sustainability objectives.  However, Intradeco’s most recent success has come from its subsidiary Inmobilaria Apopa, in Apopa, El Salvador, also known as Inmo.  Inmo has developed a process which produces nitrogen-rich plant fertilizer from its water treatment facility.

The recycling process was developed at Inmo’s water treatment facility where the water which has been used in the fabric dying process is put through several tanks with bacteria cultures which is said to restore the water. Once the water is clean it is recycled back into Inmo’s dye houses and the process revives the natural consistency and colour of the water and also makes it safe for other uses.

The mud like by-product which comes out of the process is tested and is said to show many of the same traits as expensive flower fertilizer. To avoid wasting the organic residue of the cleaning process, as well as other cotton waste from the dye house, the by-product is collected and mixed with organic cotton waste such as seed waste and lint. Intradeco says the mixture is later sent to be tested on different farms where the results show that it is more effective than the current fertilizers being used.

Intradeco claims that over the past six months 100% of the by-product from Inmo’s water treatment plant has been converted to fertilizer and says this is the first time an apparel manufacturer’s water treatment facility has implemented such a process.

K-C to manage Intradeco Apparel recycling program

June 11, 2010 (El Salvador)

In May, 2010, Intradeco Apparel, through its subsidiary Intradesa in Soyapango, El Salvador, embarked on its continued efforts to create more sustainable practices at their facilities. This movement is part of Intradeco’s Corporate Environmental Responsibility in which the company has made strategic alliances with domestic companies to meet their criteria of environmentally responsible goals. This program expands the management team’s goals to stay ahead of the curve on sustainable programs, as well as the reuse of waste, and regeneration of energy.

Most recently Intradesa has initiated an effort to develop a paper recycling campaign with Kimberly Clark. Primarily, this program involves the collection and regeneration of paper waste at the manufacturing plant which turns collected paper waste to future use and benefits. Kimberly Clark will manage Intradesa’s internal recycling program. The second link in this project involves Intradesa’s commitment to purchase the recycled paper, from Kimberly Clark. Intradesa will be the first in El Salvador to bring about a project like this, which may hopefully incentivize other manufacturers to follow its lead.

An environmental impact study has been conducted at Intradesa, highlighting the impact of forming strategic alliances with outside companies to handle recycling processes. In addition to the newly established Paper Recycling Program with Kimberly Clark, other sustainability processes have included Waste Oil with Textiles San Andres SA; Solid Waste- through Recycling Company Textil SA of C.V., and sewing needles and infectious clinical bio waste by corporate HR SA of C.V

USA: Intradeco Apparel earns sustainability award

HomeCompanies that practice practical methods of production without depleting natural resources or harming them in manufacturing are considered sustainable in their efforts. Intradeco Apparel Inc. is such a company, and for its continued and concentrated practices that minimize the environmental footprint and enhance the quality of life, it has been awarded three awards from three different esteemed entities (twice from one major organization).

On March 23rd, 2010, Intradeco Apparel was spotlighted by Apparel Magazine, a fashion trade publication. Winning the “2010 Sustainability All-Stars” award, Intradeco was one of five companies to be honored at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.

A large part of Intradeco Apparel’s manufacturing uses organically grown cotton. Organic cotton farming methods prevent pollution of the water table, prevent potential fatal pesticide poisoning of farmers and their families, and improve and maintain biodiversity.

Intradeco also reduced energy consumption through reduction in electrical lighting costs, annual reduction in CO2 emission, reduction in methane emissions, and nitrous oxide emissions. By October 2010 Intradeco will reduce greenhouse gases by 16%,reduce solid waste by 10% and reduce water consumption by 10%.

Felix Siman, CEO of Intradeco Apparel states, “We are very proud of our company’s commitment and undivided efforts to be sustainable. Sustainability must be a culture in the company. This has to emanate from the directors, to human resources, manufacturing operations and so on. By getting everyone involved in these goals we are able to develop more sustainable methods in all our company divisions. From the amount of disposable coffee cups used, to using co-energy generation in our dye and finish facility; to efficient lighting, product development and packaging.” He adds, “We are very pleased to be recognized and singled out by some of the most prestigious organizations for our ecological solutions.”

In addition to the Apparel Magazine 2010 Sustainability All-Star Award, an “Award for Excellence in Energy Conservation” was presented to Intradeco Apparel by P. E. Energy, Inc. in March 2009 for ongoing efforts in reducing energy consumption. All indoor lighting was addressed in the implementation of energy saving programs. Sustainability goals were also cited which would reduce greenhouse gases, reduce solid waste and reduce water consumption.

As Walmart pursues its sustainability goal of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, Intradeco has taken it upon themselves to stay ahead of the curve. The end goal to this would be to create zero waste in manufacturing and selling products that sustain people and the environment. Walmart has recognized Intradeco’s efforts, and has named it “Sustainable Supplier of the Year” for two consecutive years, 2008 and 2009. This award came after all the initiatives taken by Intradeco with its Men's, Boys, and Infant Organic Products, recycled polyester, biodegradable bags, and energy efficient buildings.

Intradeco Apparel is a broad based, vertical fashion manufacturer based in Miami, Florida. The company has manufacturing facilities in Central America. Since 1982, Intradeco supplies quality fashion basics and underwear to major retailers in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Retailers include, JC Penney, SEARS, Walmart, Meijer, Target.

Intradeco Apparel Offers Organic Cotton Products Benefitting from Cafta Agreement

Organic cotton products available now in Wal*Mart

Miami- Intradeco Apparel, Inc. now offers textile products produced of 100 % organic cotton through Inmobiliaria Apopa, the only CAFTA certified organic cotton producer in the region.

The cotton is produced by Inmobiliaria Apopa, a 100% cotton Ring Spinning Mill in operation since 1965 in El Salvador, which in turn is part of Intradeco Apparel, Inc, under strict regulations in order to meet the CAFTA agreement standards. This 100 % organic cotton is produced in an isolated environment to guarantee its purity. Intradeco's products enter in the US duty free which greatly keeps its production costs down.

Intradeco Apparel will be offering its CAFTA 100% certified organic cotton products throughout the US in Wal-Mart as part of the company's sustainability initiative.

There are vast benefits to producing and offering organic cotton for purchase. Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture.

Moreover, by purchasing an organic cotton product, consumers can support the organic farming industry. This encourages agricultural methods that do not harm the environment and help to reduce the amount of potentially harmful chemical compounds in the air. Finally, consumers contribute to a recycling strategy. Organic materials decompose naturally back into the soil and do not leave behind harmful toxins.

There have also been studies that have shown the many health benefits of using cotton products, especially in babies and allergy sufferers.

Additionally, the dying operation of Intradeco's 100% certified organic cotton is powered by waste steam, furthering reducing the impact to the environment.

Intradeco Apparel acquires Baxter International and its revolutionary V-TEC Fabric Dyeing Process.

Miami, Florida , December 28, 2005 -- Intradeco Apparel, with headquarters in Miami, has recently added Baxter International, a major supplier of basic and fashion denim and casual bottoms to the midtier and mass market, to its families of subsidiaries.

Baxter International manufactures knit tops using its patented V-Tec process, resulting in a unique vintage appearance with a silky and soft hand. Distressed or heavily washed looks are becoming increasingly important in retail and historically this look has been attempted through pigment garment dying, resulting in varying degrees of success and less than satisfactory controls in the production process.

The V-Tec process transformed the industry, as it achieves a vintage and washed down look employing jet equipment for dying knit fabric instead of employing garment dying processes. With the use of jet equipment in the fabric stage of color, consistency is significantly controlled between dye lots and the process is suitable for all types of textiles, including light-weight fabric, without causing any degradation of the material.

Besides the added advantages of improved production and quality controls, V-Tec is also environmentally friendly, as it contains no heavy metals and uses a reduced amount of water. The process is also formaldehyde free, which is important when manufacturing children's apparel as well as maternity, men's and ladies' apparel.
